OFL opens nominations for 2015 Convention awards

OFL opens nominations for 2015 Convention awards
The Ontario Federation of Labour is accepting nominations for its 2015 Convention Awards two of which recognize former health and safety leaders.
The Cliff Pilkey Labour Activist Award recognizes outstanding contributions of a worker or retiree who has had a significant impact on the labour movement and community to the benefit of working people. Pilkey, OFL president from 1976 to 1986, is remembered as a champion of working people whose particular contributions to workplace health and safety benefit workers still. Pilkey, who passed away in 2012, knew early on that workers and their representatives would need comprehensive training, designed by and for workers, to help assert newly won health and safety rights. His instrumental vision and stewardship not only secured initial grants for an OFL health and safety training project but he successfully negotiated sustained government funding for the Workers Health & Safety Centre. Pilkey proudly served as president of the WHSC Board from 1985 to 2000 and as president emeritus from 2000 to 2009.
The first Linda Jolley Lifetime Achievement Award for Health and Safety was awarded posthumously to Jolley in 2013 shortly after her death. A former NDP research director, OFL health and safety director and vice-president of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, Jolley researched and drew attention to the plight of workers exposed to asbestos, radon and other hazards. She helped bring about Ontario’s first Occupational Health & Safety Act and the OFL’s health and safety training project which evolved into the WHSC. The Award recognizes a lifetime of work to improve working conditions for Ontario workers.
The OFL welcomes nominations from affiliates, local unions and labour councils and encourages nominees from racialized, GBLTQ, aboriginal and disabilities groups.
The awards will be presented at the OFL’s biennial convention in November.
