The WHSC has released Version 5.0 of this popular, three-hour Certification hazard-specific training module. Program developers primarily updated the program to reflect the consolidation of Ontario confined space sector regulations under a single confined spaces regulation.
Revisions explain the differences between treatment of confined spaces in construction and non-construction workplaces. For example, on constructions projects a competent person must perform an assessment of the hazards related to a confined space before any worker enters the confined space. Other workplaces are not provided this protection. On the other hand, construction workers will not benefit from a specific provision requiring other regulated workplaces to consult with the joint health and safety committee in developing and maintaining confined space programs.
The newly revised program also includes additional information about related training requirements. Finally, the updated version clarifies regulatory requirements regarding inerting, ventilating and purging of confined spaces containing atmospheric hazards.
