The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) is accepting applications for the 2017 Dick Martin Scholarship Award.
 

What:	Dick Martin Scholarship Award
Eligibility:	Post-secondary students enrolled, either full-time or part-time in an occupational health and safety-related course or program
Award:	$3000—one each to an eligible university student and college student
Deadline:	January 31, 2017

This annual award is a national competition offered by the CCOHS honouring the memory of Dick Martin—former CCOHS Governor and member of the United Steelworkers Union (USW). Martin also held many elected positions during his working life including president of his USW local—6166 in Thompson, Manitoba, President of the Manitoba Federation of Labour and Secretary-Treasurer of the Canadian Labour Congress. Throughout, he was a leading voice for the health and safety of workers. He was instrumental, for instance, in the establishment of April 28 as the Canada’s National Day of Mourning for workers injured, made sick or killed as a result of unsafe and unhealthy working conditions. The Day of Mourning is now recognized in more than 100 countries around the world.

As part of the evaluation criteria for this scholarship competition, applicants must submit an essay exploring one of the following topics:

• Prevention: Choose a high risk workplace hazard. How would you work to solve and create awareness about the issue?
• Technical: Research an existing or emerging hazard or risk (coverage may include how to identify, assess and control the risks).

 
The Workers Health and Safety Centre (WHSC) encourages scholarship candidates to explore our many online resources to help better understand a wide range of workplace hazards with a focus on preventing harmful exposures. 
 
The Dick Martin Scholarship Award competition is meant to support those pursuing higher education in the field of occupational health and safety.

For our part, the WHSC supports a number of bursaries for students currently enrolled in labour study programs at a number of Ontario post-secondary institutions along with an annual province-wide competition for students entering their first year of post-secondary education.
