Workers Health & Safety Centre (WHSC) ergonomics training is designed to help prepare workplace parties for prevention of RSIs—the leading cause of work-related pain and injuries affecting workers in all sectors.

In addition to the regular in-class learning experience offered by the WHSC, this enhanced training opportunity will explore recent updates to provincial system efforts to help eliminate RSIs, also commonly known as musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).

These efforts include a new project lead by the Centre for Research Excellence in Musculoskeletal Disorders (CRE-MSD) to revise Ontario’s MSD Prevention Guideline and resource materials. Assisted by an advisory committee on which the WHSC will participate, the project aims to create a new document that gives clearer guidance to a range of workplaces—in different sectors and of different sizes—about the tools that can be used to identify and assess MSD risk factors.

Those enrolling in the WHSC RSI Day training opportunity will also receive new WHSC MSD prevention resources, including case studies documenting successful ergonomic interventions, as well as a publication summarizing the economic case for them.

Each of the WHSC ergonomic programs on special offer focus on the knowledge and tools needed to help identify the working conditions and hazards responsible for musculoskeletal pain and MSDs. Equally important, this training offers essential insight into prevention solutions. This training is critical to joint health and safety committee members and representatives, workers and supervisors who all have important legal obligations to identify, assess and recommend or implement preventive solutions.

Held annually on the last day in February, RSI Awareness Day serves to highlight the epidemic of RSIs and its unacceptable toll. Equally important, it serves to remind workplace parties prevention is within reach. In fact simple, often inexpensive ergonomic solutions may be all that is needed to prevent musculoskeletal pain and more chronic MSDs.
