WHSC adds mandatory training opportunities ahead of summer slowdown

Workers getting WHSC occupational health and safety training
Coordinating the delivery of occupational health and safety training programs during the summer months can be a challenge for employers.

Recognizing this challenge and the need for employers to comply with their significant training obligations, the Workers Health & Safety Centre (WHSC) has scheduled additional community-based training across Ontario over the coming weeks.

JHSC certification training

First up is Basic Certification (Part I) Training scheduled for June 5 through June 8. Be sure to register today as classes are filling fast.

This training is the essential first step for employers who must ensure at least two members of a joint health and safety committee (JHSC) are certified — one worker representative and one management representative. To become certified, a JHSC member must then complete Workplace-Specific Hazard Certification Training (Part II).

These programs must be approved by the Ministry of Labour (Ministry), delivered by an approved provider and completed within six months of one another. Further still, is the need to complete approved Certification Refresher every three years to maintain certification status.

WHSC is approved by the Ministry to deliver all mandatory Certification programs.

GHS WHMIS training

Next on the WHSC community-based training schedule is Globally Harmonized (GHS) WHMIS Training offered on Monday, June 11. Canada’s Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System, commonly known as WHMIS, is designed to provide workers with information about hazardous products used, stored, handled or disposed of in the workplace.

By December 1, 2018, employers must train or retrain workers and supervisors to comply with the GHS-related changes to WHMIS regulations.

Working at heights training

Ontario health and safety law was altered back in April, 2015 requiring employers to ensure workers on construction projects complete a Ministry-approved WAH training program. Employers must also ensure workers complete approved WAH refresher training within three years of the initial training. For many, this expiry date is fast approaching.

To ensure access to this life-saving and mandatory training, the WHSC continues to add training dates in both May and June in communities across the province for WHSC, Ministry-approved WAH Training and WAH Refresher Training.

WHSC training…ensured compliance and learning

As Ontario’s government-designated health and safety training centre, you can be sure WHSC training meets MOL requirements and so much more.

Beyond the programs listed above, the WHSC offers hundreds of other essential workplace health and safety training opportunities. Each ensures:
  • participant-centred learning
  • classroom demonstration of knowledge and skills
  • portable records of training
  • competitive pricing
  • ongoing support.
