Our Role
Meeting Your Training Needs
Having trained hundreds of thousands of workers and other workplace parties,
we know our "training works". But, more importantly so do others. For instance,
the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) have designated the Workers
Health & Safety Centre as Ontario's "training centre". Others have not been
shy to weigh in with their testimonials:
"We
were very impressed both with the quality of the training material and with
the instructor; we plan to use them again. It was no-hassle training for us;
we did not have to be concerned with materials or instructors. The Workers
Health & Safety Centre did it all. We just had to be there and participate
in the training." - Margot Dillon, Manager, Precepta Ford
Customer Relationship Centre, Toronto
"There
was definitely a team building aspect to the training as well. We all work in
different departments with not much daily interaction. Taking the training
program together certainly helped to create a joint health and safety
committee that will work together to improve workplace conditions." - Debbie Block, Director, Human Resources, Canadian Depository for
Securities
"We
use the Workers Health & Safety Centre because we feel these are the
best training programs out there for both quality of information and relevance
to our workplace needs. We also like the worker-training-worker philosophy of
the Centre and the fact that instructors are from the workplace which means
they know the people and the industry - far better than any
consultant." - Don McGraw, full time health, safety and
environmental chair, Inco, Sudbury

Training Mandated by Law
Ontario employers falling under the Provinical and Federal jurisdictions have
legal obligations to provide a wide range of occupational health and safety
training to workers and supervisors.
The Workers Health & Safety Centre has programs at the ready to help
employers meet these legal obligations. WHMIS training for the general workforce
and Certification Training (Parts 1 and 2) for designated joint committee
members are just two examples. Specialized training is also mandated for workers
involved with the transportation of dangerous goods, propane handling and anyone
who may come into contact with asbestos, lead or other designated substances.
Our experience though, tells us many workplaces seek to go beyond legislated
training minimums as part of a wider due diligence strategy. With more than 100
hazard specific, skill development and occupational health and safety leadership
development programs ready for immediate delivery, the Workers Health &
Safety Centre is well-positioned to meet all of your training needs.
But we also recognize the uniqueness of each workplace. When called upon we
can meet your specific needs through our customized training
service.
Our Unique Delivery System Adults
learn best when they see immediate applications for the principles and concepts
they learn in training sessions. Our approach to training delivery ensures this
occurs by mixing hazard identification, assessment and control theory with
practical workplace examples.
At the heart of our unique training delivery system are the thousands of
instructors qualified to deliver Workers Health & Safety Centre training.
Each is well-schooled in adult education techniques and occupational health and
safety concepts. But equally important, they are drawn directly from Ontario
workplaces bringing with them extensive practical workplace experience. Our
workers training workers approach has proven effective for decades.
Thus, it came as no surprise for instance, when an independent consulting
firm hired by the Ontario government to study the effectiveness of Certification
Training in the 1990's found 90 per cent of participants judged Workers Health
& Safety Centre-qualified instructors as the key to the program's
success.
Understanding the dynamic nature of occupational health and safety though,
the Workers Health & Safety Centre offers instructors many opportunities to
keep current throughout the year. Some choose to enroll in new training
programs. Many attend information update meetings offered quarterly or
instructor upgrade sessions offered annually. All receive Workers Health &
Safety Centre print publications outlining relevant and emerging health and
safety information.
Meeting Your Information Needs
The Workers Health & Safety Centre offers a range of research and
information services helping to keep workers and other workplace parties in the
know about all things related to health and safety.
Workers and their representatives submit thousands of inquiries to our
training service representatives each year. Of these, hundreds are of a
technical nature requiring the expertise of our highly trained research staff.
In any case, we provide the inquirer with a comprehensive but easy to understand
response. Best of all, we provide this service free of charge.
We also offer a number of publications exploring current occupational health,
safety and environmental issues. From clear and concise single page
hazard-bulletins to our flagship quarterly magazine "At the Source", we invite
you to access and share this information with co-workers, family members and
others in your community.
