Celtic Cross - Rideau Canal Workers' Monument This
celtic cross carved out of grey granite stands in memory of more than 1000
labourers who died from malaria and occupational accidents between 1826
and 1832 during the building of the Rideau Canal. The monument is located
at the south end of Doug Fluhrer Park along the Cataraqui River (just off
the unpaved Wellington St. extension with Bay Street at one end and
Cataraqui Street on the other).
Rideau Canal Workers' Monument This plaque stands
in recognition of the many French Canadians and recently arrived
immigrants, notably Irish, Scottish and British who provided crucial
labour in the building of the Rideau Canal. Many died as a result of
dangerous working conditions, malaria and other diseases. The plaque is
located at Kingston Mills Lock (located on Kingston Mill Rd. that runs off
of Montreal St. north of the 401).
