Day of Mourning in the Schools

Complementing our Young Worker Awareness Program, the Workers Centre and the Steelworkers union have partnered to develop and deliver resource materials and presentations for high school students province-wide, hopefully reaching them before they begin their first job, or at very least before they suffer the effects of hazardous work.
In anticipation of our national Day of Mourning for workers killed, injured or made ill on the job, each April, members of the Steelworkers union visit schools to exchange experiences and concerns. Through this exchange students learn about the hazards they may face, ways to control or better yet eliminate them, their rights in the workplace and the ongoing struggle to enforce and improve health and safety legislation. Specifically, they review their right to know about hazards to which they might be exposed, their right to refuse dangerous work, their right to participate through joint committees or health and safety representatives and the employer responsibility to provide a safe and healthy workplace.
All young workers along with educators and parents are encouraged to access recent resource materials for this annual initiative. To request a presentation contact Al Hedd, health and safety resource technician, Steelworkers, Canada.
