SUPERVISOR HEALTH AND SAFETY TRAINING
Supervisors may not set organizational health and safety policy, but they are on the frontlines of ensuring implementation. It’s no surprise then, the law demands that they be competent.
In Ontario, supervisors are required to complete basic health and safety awareness training, as well as attain knowledge and competency-based training specific to the workplace. Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act employers must appoint a competent person as supervisor. A competent person has been defined as qualified because of knowledge, training and experience to organize the work and its performance; familiar with the Act and Regulations that apply to the work, and knowledgeable about any potential or actual danger to health or safety in the workplace.
Effective supervisor competency training helps supervisors better understand and apply these responsibilities.
