Many of us have experienced moments when we wished we knew CPR or had the skills to help someone in distress.
While many people assume that first aid and CPR are responsibilities reserved for medical professionals, they are essential life skills everyone should learn. And in the workplace, they are required by law. Workers Health & Safety Centre (WHSC) offers accessible and for a
limited time first aid and CPR training at a reduced cost to equip anyone with the confidence and knowledge to respond in an emergency.
Why first aid and CPR matter?
1.
Timely and effective first aid can be a matter of life or death.
Quick and appropriate first aid can drastically impact the outcome of an emergency, potentially saving lives in critical situations.
2.
Incidents can occur at any moment – being prepared is crucial.
Emergencies can strike unexpectedly, so being prepared to act swiftly is essential for minimizing harm and ensuring proper care.
3.
Every second counts – the first few minutes are critical in a medical emergency.
The first few minutes after an incident are the most critical. Early intervention can prevent further harm until professional medical help arrives. For example, in cases of cardiac arrest, the brain can be deprived of oxygen within just three to four minutes. Administering CPR in that window can significantly increase the chance of survival.
4.
First aid can accelerate recovery.
Administering first aid promptly can reduce recovery time. For instance, if a bleeding victim doesn’t receive immediate attention to control blood loss, it could lead to life-threatening conditions like hemorrhagic shock. Immediate care can prevent such complications.
5.
It alleviates pain and discomfort.
Injuries often cause significant pain. A trained first aider can assess the situation, manage the pain, and ensure the victim remains as comfortable as possible while awaiting professional care.
6.
First aid knowledge can save your own life.
Understanding first aid can be a lifesaver, whether it’s your own life or that of a loved one. In high-risk environments or during accidents, being trained to stay calm and perform life-saving techniques can make all the difference.
7.
It promotes confidence and safety.
Knowing first aid empowers you to be more vigilant and proactive about potential risks. This increased awareness fosters a safer environment in your workplace, and in your home and community.
8.
First aid training is legally required at work.
For all these reasons, First Aid training is required in Ontario workplaces by law. The
Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) enforces Regulation 1101 states “
all employers covered by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act (the Act) are required to provide first aid equipment, facilities, and trained personnel in all workplaces.” These requirements vary depending on the number of employees at each workplace.
