Energized equipment and machinery can be hazardous and even fatal to exposed workers unless proper lockout and control procedures and training on these are in place.
Under Ontario’s
Occupational Health & Safety Act employers have important duties to provide information, instruction and supervision to workers on all workplace hazards including electrical lockout and the requirements to isolate and lockout hazardous energy.
Workplace representatives, including some joint health and safety committee members, may not work directly with energized equipment yet still need to understand the basic concepts of lockout and methods of producing a "zero energy state". Workers Health & Safety Centre’s Lockout awareness training addresses this training need. Now offered in our
virtual classrooms, this program reviews relevant legislation, methods and devices used for lockout procedures, as well as the contents of an effective lockout policy and program, including worker training.

Meeting employer obligations
Ontario employers governed by the Regulation for Industrial Establishments (
Reg. 851)
must comply with specific requirements for worker protection against machine start-ups and for working with electrical equipment and around electrical installations. Employers must also develop and implement written lock-out procedures. To ensure these are understood and followed, worker training is essential and required.
To fulfill these
worker competency requirements WHSC offers a six-hour comprehensive Lockout program for the manufacturing sector. Where participant numbers warrant, we can work with you to coordinate this and almost any of
our training courses in a virtual classroom for all workers, workplace representatives and supervisors.
To tackle lockout and other critical workplace issues joint health and safety committees need to be fully trained. We can help with this too. WHSC offers regularly scheduled
JHSC Certification Training in our
virtual classrooms.
