RSI Awareness Day: Ergonomics training for awareness and action

Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSIs), also called Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs), continue to plague Ontario’s workers causing pain, suffering and often life-altering injuries.

According to Ontario’s Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), MSDs account for 30 per cent of allowed lost time injury claims. WSIB statistics also reveal several concerning trends - an increase in MSDs among younger workers (aged 25-34) and a steady rise in MSDs to multiple body parts

Often invisible to others, MSDs can damage muscles, nerves and tendons causing pain and permanent disability. Many injuries are never reported, and many claims are still denied, yet worker suffering is real, and lives are impacted. These injuries affect employers too, driving up costs associated with injury compensation and lost productivity.

On RSI Awareness Day and every day, Workers Health & Safety Centre (WHSC) offers quality training to increase awareness and action aimed at MSD prevention.

Employer obligations for prevention and training

Controlling workplace MSD hazards is best practice, but also a legal obligation. Employers also have a general duty to take every reasonable precaution to protect workers against hazards including those which contribute to MSDs such as repetition, forceful movements, heavy loads, excessive pace of work, awkward or fixed postures, insufficient recovery time, cold temperatures, vibration, contact stress, and psychosocial stress.

Fortunately, most of these hazards can be identified and eliminated through ergonomic interventions which design work and work environments with the physical and mental needs of workers in mind.

All WHSC ergonomics programs also focus on the knowledge and tools needed to identify MSD symptoms and work design and other hazards associated with MSDs while offering insight into prevention solutions. As such, this training is critical for workers, workplace representatives, employers, and supervisors, all of whom have a critical role in identifying, assessing, recommending, and implementing prevention measures.

Whether you train with us in-person or in a virtual classroom, training is led in real time by an experienced, WHSC-qualified instructor to ensure critical learning is achieved. WHSC virtual classrooms are highly effective, but in-person training remains the gold standard. That’s why many of our ergonomics training programs are available in-person at WHSC regional training facilities in Hamilton, Markham, and Sudbury. We designed our training centres with learners in mind to support interaction, collaboration and problem-solving.
