A Mississauga manufacturer’s failure to comply with machine guarding mandates resulted in a worker death and employer conviction — a painful reminder of the need for prevention. 
 
According to a recently published Ontario government court bulletin, the company failed as an employer to ensure the exposed moving parts of a machine were adequately guarded, as required by Ontario’s Regulation for Industrial Establishments (s. 24, O. Reg 851). This was contrary to section 25(1)(c) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA). The worker was killed while working alone. Two co-workers eventually found the deceased. The company was fined a total of $150,000.

WHSC Moving Machine Parts training offers critical insight into the hazardous actions and motions of machinery that can place the safety of exposed workers at risk. Also explored are the safeguards available to control machine hazards and the specific obligations for employers to protect workers including ensuring exposed moving parts are equipped with and guarded by a guard or other device that prevents access.

WHSC Lockout training explores the many sources of energy in a workplace and how each can be hazardous and sometimes fatal to exposed workers. Also discussed are the basic concepts of lockout as a method of producing a "zero energy state" and eliminating harmful exposures including moving machine parts. Relevant legislation will be reviewed along with the development and implementation of an effective workplace specific lockout program.

WHSC assists with mandatory training too

With more than 35 years of experience as Ontario’s only government-designated health and safety training centre, we can also help employers and workplaces comply with many mandatory training programs. Each program is designed to meet, even exceed, mandated training standards.

In fact, we are currently offering scheduled in-person training, including all JHSC Certification Training, Working at Heights Training, and Supervisor Training at 50 per cent off the regular price.
