Workers Health & Safety Centre

WHSC ergonomics training deeply discounted during February

Workers Health & Safety Centre’s (WHSC) current ergonomics training campaign is targeting awareness and action to help prevent debilitating injuries throughout the year.

Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI), also called Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs), remain the leading type of work-related injury in Ontario accounting for 30 per cent of allowed lost time injury claims. Equally concerning, Ontario’s Workplace Safety and Insurance Board statistics reveal that MSDs are increasing among younger workers (aged 25-34) and more workers are experiencing MSDs to multiple body parts.

Often invisible, MSDs can damage muscles, nerves and tendons causing pain and permanent disability. Workers’ lives and livelihoods are significantly impacted. Employers are affected too by rising injury compensation costs and lost productivity.

Preventing these injuries will be top of mind for many communities and workplaces across Ontario and around the world who recognize the last day of February as International RSI Awareness Day. On this day and every day, WHSC’s quality training supports workplace awareness and action aimed at MSD prevention.

Employer obligations for prevention and training

Controlling workplace MSD hazards is best practice, but also a legal obligation. Employers also have a general duty to take every reasonable precaution to protect workers against hazards including those which contribute to MSDs such as repetition, forceful movements, heavy loads, excessive pace of work, awkward or fixed postures, insufficient recovery time, cold temperatures, vibration, contact stress, and psychosocial stress.

Fortunately, most of these hazards can be identified and eliminated through ergonomic interventions which design work and work environments with the physical and mental needs of workers in mind.

All WHSC ergonomics programs also focus on the knowledge and tools needed to identify MSD symptoms and work design and other hazards associated with MSDs while offering insight into prevention solutions. As such, this training is critical for workers, workplace representatives, employers, and supervisors, all of whom have a critical role in identifying, assessing, recommending, and implementing prevention measures.

Whether you train with us in-person or in a virtual classroom, training is led in real time by an experienced, WHSC-qualified instructor to ensure critical learning is achieved. WHSC virtual classrooms are highly effective, but in-person training remains the gold standard. That’s why many of our ergonomics training programs are available in-person at WHSC regional training facilities in Hamilton, Markham, and Sudbury. We designed our training centres with learners in mind to support interaction, collaboration and problem-solving.
