Workers receive WHMIS training in Ontario

PLEASE NOTE: Given the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 crisis, WHSC has recently innovated to offer WHMIS training in live, real-time virtual classrooms. For now, this is the only WHSC-scheduled WHMIS training option available. Although scheduled courses in traditional classrooms are on offer for the fall. To sign up for virtual training, see your options under the “Virtual Courses” tab below.

Workplaces in Ontario and other jurisdictions across Canada should have completed transition from original WHMIS to Globally-Harmonized (GHS) WHMIS by now. The transition deadline was December 1, 2018.

The purpose of GHS is to standardize information about hazardous products and how it is communicated to workers on a global scale. This includes new WHMIS hazard classes, pictograms, labels and safety data sheets. Employers must obtain this information from their suppliers and ensure worker access to it. They also have an obligation to provide WHMIS training in the new system, regardless of whether workers were trained in the old system.

To help workplaces seeking to comply with new WHMIS training obligations, the Workers Health & Safety Centre (WHSC) has developed a new WHMIS training program. Intended for workers, supervisors and managers, this highly interactive WHMIS training program applies adult learning principles to ensure learning is engaging, relevant and achieved. Such is the difference between our program and other free WHMIS training programs, which are not training at all, but merely online information.

Upon successful completion of our WHMIS training program, WHSC issues a WHMIS certificate of training and maintains student records for any future requirement.
