Subsidy for small workplace OHS representatives training ends soon

The deadline for employers to secure a government subsidy to support training of worker health and safety representatives is fast approaching. Don’t miss out!

Through the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development’s Prevention Office, the Small Business Health and Safety Training Program (SBHSTP) offered reimbursement to eligible employers to recover registration fees and lost-time wages (to a maximum of $350, $50 for registration and $300 for wages) associated with training their health and safety representatives (HSR).

The SBHSTP reimbursement program ends on March 31, 2024:

  • Learners must have completed training and have the certificate of completion in hand by March 31, 2024
  • Eligible employers can apply for reimbursement up until 11:59 pm on July 15, 2024
  • MLITSD anticipates all reimbursements will be processed by early September 2024.

Most workplaces in Ontario which employ between 6 and 19 workers are required to ensure a health and safety representative (HSR) is selected from among the workers. Worker HSRs have most of the same rights and powers as joint health and safety committee members in larger workplaces making HSR training essential.

Workers Health & Safety Centre’s (WHSC) comprehensive Worker Health & Safety Representative-Smaller Workplaces is designed to ensure worker HSRs understand and competently exercise their important workplace role. Our training program meets and exceeds health and safety representative training guidelines as developed by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development’s Prevention Office.
